Making and Using Transfers for Indirect Heat Release Paper

Decal Production by Screen Printing

  • Indirect heat release decals are screen printed the same way as waterslide decals. The ceramic colour is mixed with a special medium of solvent, resin and plasticiser and printed by screen onto the paper.
  • A lacquer covercoat is applied, covering the whole printed design. This allows the decal to be removed from the paper in its entirety. For indirect, heat release transfers it should be noted that the thickness and/or the materials printed can influence the quality of the final product.

    Decal application
Service Engineers PLC in the United Kingdom and Thuringia Netzsch in Germany produce indirect heat release machines for both the pad machine and roller machine applications. Machines are designed for the automated decoration of simple and complex shapes on flat and holloware and are suitable for decorating glass, earthenware and bone china.

    Roller machine wrap around

Roller machine wrap around machines are also capable of decorating large panels of flat glass, such as shower and cooker doors and automotive glass.

    Firing
Decals applied on the ware can be fired immediately after application using the same cycles that are used for waterslide applied decals.

Making and Using Transfers for Direct Heat Release Paper

    Decal Production
Decals for direct heat release are printed as a 'mirror image' of the finished design. A covercoat is printed first, then the ceramic colours - mixed with a special medium of solvent, resin and plasticiser. The colours are typically screen printed, one at a time, onto the paper. An adhesive is printed last, in register with the outline of the design.

    Decal Application
Automated Transfers in the UK and Transfer Technologies in Germany produce direct heat release application machines. These machines are primarily designed for the decoration of holloware but some have now been redesigned to decorate panels of flat glass, such as shower and cooker doors and automotive glass.

Most machines use decals printed on rolls of paper and apply the printed decal directly to the ware. The paper passes over a heated backing plate or roller to melt the wax and activate the adhesive. The print then comes into direct contact with the substrate as it moves along the application machine and the design is released.

    Firing
Ware decorated by heat release can be fired immediately after application using the same cycles that are used to fire decals applied by waterslide
